Announcement to Battery Manufacturing Companies from the ROAR Technical Director and the ROAR President: When ROAR began the process of Approval for LiPo Batteries, one of the original requirements was to have each final product contain a tamper resistant wrapper around the case seam. A waiver was initially provided to this requirement. The Waiver of the ROAR LiPo Wrapper labeling expired January 2009. The Seam Wrapper is to contain the text "ROAR APPROVED". Please See Rule 8.3.2.2. for the full context of the Approved Product Criteria. Link to ROAR Rules On-line CLICK HERE With this expiration, All new distribution of ROAR Approved LiPo Products MUST now contain the "ROAR APPROVED" Seam Wrapper, or risk removal of product from ROAR's Approved Product Listing, until such time the Seam Wrapper is added from manufacturing and/or distribution. All New Product Submissions will not have Approval Request Processed, unless the wrapper is part of the samples submitted to the lab. For reference, the portion of Rule 8.3.2.2. regarding Seam Wrapper labeling:"........Both the top and bottom sections of the case must be secured together by glue, double-sided tape or heat seal with a label across the seam stating "ROAR Approved" in such a manner that separation of the case to remove or replace the cells will destroy the case and/or label and render it unusable in competition. Approved batteries will be required to have a label stating "ROAR Approved" across the seam. ROAR will have a grandfather clause until Ja ROAR would also like to clarify a couple additional Approved Status conditions. Approval Submissions: We are now running a Semi Annual LiPo Approval process for 2S and 4S Packs.8.3.1.3 Battery approvals will be processed on a bi-yearly basis. All proposed cells and lipo packs must be received by the ROAR Technical Director by the 1st of September for approval by October 1st or received by April 1st for approval by May 1st. The final decisions on approvals will be communicated to the manufacturer/distributor or assembler and posted on the website listing when approved. Availability: LiPo Batteries are subject to the Availability Rule (as we have for NiMh) for receiving/maintaining ROAR Approved Product Status 8.3.1.4 All batteries must be actually available and in stock for retail purchase from at least three (3) North American retail sources before approval can be finalized. Please include on-line and offline retail channels contact information, for verification of supply at the time of submission for approval. Running Change to Cell: The Technology is changing rapidly. Should manufacturers find an improved cell to use in previously Approved Products, and decide to make a running change without re-branding or submitting the item for Lab review, and ROAR finds the components to be different from the samples provided during the approval process, Approval to the Product in question will be Repealed. A new component (especially a different composition of cell) will need to be submitted for Inspection/Approval. Part of our LiPo Approval Inspection includes specifications our Race Management Teams can conduct in the field. If during the Race Inspections Protocols a pack appears outside the original parameters, the Racer/User could be subject to disqualification for using an altered product. Original Mfg Product Label Everyone appears to be getting into the custom body wrap business these days. Custom Wraps/decals are covering everything from Tools to Chairs, to antenna tubes it appears. Decal d jour. Even Custom Wraps for LiPo cells. They make everything look professional and easy to recognize your gear. We request Racers and Factory Team Representatives read and comply with the Original Label Rule. Rule 8.3.2.4. states "the Markings on the case are required stating the rated voltage and capacity of the battery. The Value Added Manufacturers name and/or logo shall be easily readable on the case." Please be aware any aftermarket wraps/decals MUST NOT replace the original mfg label. As was the case with NiMh cells, should the original mfg label be removed, the product will be ruled an unapproved product which could subject the racer to disqualification n 2009 for all approved cells at competition on the Label rule."
