ROAR Region 2 Race Report

Round 2 of the ROAR Region 2 Indoor championship series traveled south over the
arctic chilled weekend to a not much less frigid, Debbies RC World in
Chesapeake, VA. Approximately eighty racers from throughout the Mid-Atlantic
region navigated the changing outside weather conditions from several inches of
snow in the north, to arctic air covering much of the nation and back to
freezing rain covered roadways on their return endeavors to compete in the
second round of the three race series being used to crown the region 2 one-tenth
scale off-road champions. Racers were represented from Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. Classes scheduled for the event
included both two wheel drive stock and modified buggy, four wheel drive
modified buggy, stadium truck, short course classes, and the young guns.
A rundown of the official results is as follows. Making a return to the series
as an exhibition class for this race, the stadium trucks put on a show by most
of the local drivers. Jamison Reichard would put his truck in the TQ position
and it would not stay out front too long. Team Associated's Mike Kling would
put the pressure on early and take the lead and never look back for the rest of
the race. Reichard would finish second and Jake Jones would round out the
podium in third. The two wheel drive short course trucks were also chasing down
another Team Associated driver. Barry Goodwin from New Jersey, would be the top
qualifier and eventual winner in the SCT class. As Goodwin checked out from the
rest of the pack, Jay Drakeford would settle in comfortably in the number two
position. The tightest racing would go on between Bumps and Jumps RC Tim
Mullenhour and Debbies RC Chris (Koolaid) Davenport for the final podium
position. After a rough driving call would pro
vide some distance between number three and four, they found themselves back
together by the end of the race where Mullenhour was able to clinch the number
three position with great sportsmanship being shown by both racers.
Four wheel drive short course continued to be lead by the Tekno SCT410 team of
of Devin Chesney out of Lewistown, PA and Tyler Herwig from Somerset, PA. The
duo would split the eventual 2nd place finisher, Frank Deiny driving the Losi
SCTE 2.0. The top three cars of Chesney, Deiny and Herwig were pretty much in a
class of their own. Jack Wicker driving an MIP Losi did put in a good run in
the main battling it out early in the race with Herwig for the 3rd place
position. Herwig would eventually make the pass at about the half way point
and clinch the final podium spot. The four wheel drive buggy class had twenty
two entries which was the highest number seen in most recent years of running
the series. Colby Waddell, driving a 2014 Xray B4, laid down track record
breaking times throughout the day to win the class. Team Associated's Alex
Miller and Josh Knight came up short in tracking down Waddell throughout the
event and finished second and third respectively.
The final two classes were the two wheel drive buggies. The stock class was an
all Bumps and Jumps RC show where Steve Walter qualifying in the number two
position driver a Schumacher would steal the show from the top qualifier of Matt
Klempa. Walter took the lead in the early laps and left the battle on the
track for second and third between Jack Wicker and Klempa. Wicker would come
out with the upper arm finishing second and Klempa rounding out the podium for
third. The two wheel drive modified A -main feature proved to be the race to
see as spectators lined the track with no reason to be in their seats. Colby
Waddell, Chris Bing, Alex Miller and Roger Holmes were the top four in the
freight train to take off on the sound of the tone. By the first hair pin,
Holmes and Miller tangled and sent Miller to the back of the back. Waddell and
Bing would take off and Waddell would distance himself by s sizeable amount from
the entire field. Three quarters of the way into the race, Waddell would upset his car in the same area needing to be
marshaled two laps in a row. This opened the door for Bing to close in and take
over the lead. In the closing laps Bing's car now seemed to consume every race
line where Waddell wanted to try and take the lead back. It was a drag race
down the front stretch to the finish line where Waddell gave one last attempt at
pulling to the inside corner of Bing where both cars collided and tumbled across
the finish line. Bing would hang on to the win by two one hundredths of a
second over Waddell. The final leg of the series will be hosted on March 22nd
at The Track in Gaithersburg, MD.
