Region 1 Announcements and News July 2008 The first regional race of the year was the Electric Off Road Championships. The race was held June 20-22 at Glenwood RC, located in the western New York town of Springville. Here are the highlights of the weekend as reported by Josh "The Milkman" Smith: Held in the scenic town of Springville, NY, the ROAR Region 1 Electric champs was hosted by Glenwood RC. As WNY's finest racing facility, Glenwood RC has hosted many large scale races, so having a regional race was nothing new to these guys. Friday June 20th- Working all week trying to dodge the weather the Glenwood crew worked every night leading up to Friday getting everything just right in anticipation for a large crowd. The track held up great to the rain thursday night so we didn't have too much work to do Friday. With the forecast not looking to promising, people began to show up anyways around noon to dial in their cars on their recently changed layout. After some light prepping the racers took to the track and worked in the new sections. By the time evening rolled around, we had a good sized crew of racers on hand. Saturday June 21st- Qualifying started around noon and right away you could tell this was going to be a great weekend of racing. Our friends who run a track in Ontario came down with a crew and were putting together some FAST runs. We had a few guys traveled all the way from Ohio to race with us and they too were having fun keeping everyone in check. Mother Nature won for around an hour and dumped around 2inches of rain and hail. The track held together and we got to work on drying it up as soon as the rain ended. There was a need to take about a 2 hour break to get the track back in shape. Everyone was understanding and put faith in us to get the show rolling again and finish the day out. Some of the racers pitched in and helped too. After about 2 hours we got it dry enough to drive on and finished the second round. By the time the third round ended, the track was almost dusty! Hard to believe that only a few hours earlier, it had a few inches of water on it. Sunday June 22nd- The morning brought the promise of a rain free day and that was what everyone wanted to hear. Through three rounds of qualifying and drastic weather changes, the track surface was beginning to loosen up and turn rougher in spots. This was where patience and smooth driving would come in handy. With the talent that was on hand this day, all the mains were packed and poised for an exciting day of racing. Each main had its own set of ups and downs and many lead changes as each racer tried to keep their car right side up and stay on the lead lap. When all was said and done, our racers that traveled from afar, gave the local guys a run for their money and taking home quite a bit of hardware. Thanks for the report, Josh! The next Regional on the schedule is the Nitro Off Road Championships to be held at Wolcott Hobbies on July 26 and 27. Wolcott has a reputation for having great races so this should be even better! Unfortunately there's bad news to report for our region. The Fanatic Remote Racers is an on road nitro club in Brooklyn, New York. They were using a permanent track in the Floyd Bennett Field park and nature preserve. Unfortunately they were forced to tear down their driver's stand, as it did not meek the parks requirements. While people still use the track for practice, there has been no organized racing there since the driver's stand removal. Also the club leadership has come under harsh criticism for several problems. Rick Hill, the president of FRR, has been dealing with family issues and understandably has not focused on the club. As Regional Director I feel I must look after the best interests of the racers. So the 2008 Nitro On Road Regional will not be held at Floyd Bennett Field. NERCAR has already volunteered to fill in as the host club, and they are currently looking for a potential site. As more information is available I will have it posted here on the ROAR site and on www.lihobbyinfo.com This will happen fast so check in often. I'm also sad to report that last year's host of the carpet regional, Speedzone R/C, will be closing it's doors soon, if they have not done so already. Dave and company had a great track and always ran a good race. It's unfortunate we have lost so many good tracks in a short time. If you're looking for more info about Region 1 I'm an e-mail or PM away. My e-mail is jimlastella@aol.com (easy to remember) and my RC Tech screen name is jiml. And remember, have fun!
