ROAR Region 6 Report ? February 2009

Here we are in the middle of winter. Very little racing because ?Baby it?s COLD outside?. That doesn?t mean that we are not making plans for when warmer weather gets here. Many Clubs and Tracks need to be reminded that it is past time to renew ROAR Affiliation. Get those dues in to ROAR quickly people. Ed is already making plans for State and Regional Championships. You don?t want to be left out. There has been an ongoing discussion within the ROAR Executive Committee that some sort of qualification is needed in order to race in a ROAR National Event. It has been suggested that perhaps four or five Super Regionals could be held as qualifiers for national events. I think that this would require racers to travel greater distances and that the qualifying procedure could be kept within the region. For example, to race in a ROAR Regional one must have raced in a ROAR State Championship. To race in a ROAR National one must have raced in a ROAR Regional. If for some reason there is no qualifying event within a region then I think that the requirements could be waved for a racer that wanted to participate in a ROAR National. If you are a ROAR Member and you have comments or suggestions concerning a qualifying system for ROAR National events, please contact me. I would very much like to hear your thoughts and views on this subject. I will be keeping a log in order that I may report on the percentage of what members want or don?t want. Be assured that even if I disagree with you, I will bring your opinion with me to the next ROAR Executive Committee Meeting. I would like to welcome Trackseekers R/C Club in Flowood, MS the newest member track to Region 6. This group has a very competitive off road track for nitro as well as electric vehicles. They have just completed a very nice dirt oval track that will use the same drivers stand. It was my pleasure to attend their last off road race. The racing was fast and furious. With racing as competitive as it was I was very pleased to note that the race director did not have an occasion to reprimand anyone?s conduct. By the way, the on site food concession was great! I was very pleased to be invited to Destrehan, LA to attend the St. Charles Racers Charity Race. Unfortunately I had a prior commitment and could not attend. I do understand that they had a good turnout and raised a goodly amount of money for the charity. I do hope that I will be invited to attend the next event. That?s all for now. Wow!!!!! What a way to end the summer and welcome the fall. First we are greeted by Hurricane Faye, followed by Hurricane Gustav. Then I go to Maryland for the 1/8th Scale On Road Nationals only to have the race delayed one day by Hurricane Hanna. After the races, I had to hurry home to experience Hurricane Ike. One might think that I like chasing hurricanes. NOT!!!!! It was an honor to visit Chris Whitney, owner of 301 Raceway in Brandywine, Maryland as the Designated ROAR Official for the 2008 1/8th Scale On Road Nationals. Even with the day that was wiped out by the hurricane and the subsequent water mop up, the event was a total success. Chris was an excellent host. The track was very large and very clean. There was plenty of room for everyone?s pit needs and some left over. Chris made a Herculean effort to not only dry the racing surface, but to also restore the traction, as you will see in the pictures that I have included. The food was something to brag about. I thought that the folks here in the ?Deep South? knew all there was to know about Bar-B-Q. I enjoyed the food so much that I talked the Chef into giving me the secret to his special rub. As expected, the Race Management Team did an excellent job. It took a lot of efficiency to make up for the day lost to the hurricane. Bob Ingersoll had his hands full in tech. He, like the other members of the RMT took the storm in stride and got the job done. I heard many comments about the Race Management Team while I attended this event. All of the comments that were directed to me were favorable. It made me very proud to be associated with this ROAR group. Recently I had the distinct pleasure of being the Designated ROAR Official at the 2008 Electric On-Road Nationals. This event was held in Jonesboro, Arkansas at the R/C Hobbies Raceway. Quinton Robbins, our host, went all out to make everyone feel welcome. It seemed that Quinton, his family and Victoria (Quinton?s significant other), were having a competition to see who could make us the most welcome. Let me give you an example. How many races have you attended where the hosts had a hospitality night or welcome party? Well, at R/C Hobbies Raceway, after the first day of qualifying, Quinton did just that. After giving us enough time to finish with race preparations we were delighted to be offered drinks, snacks and entertainment. Talk about ?raising the bar?, these ?southerners? know how to make you feel welcome! Racing at this event was fast and sometimes furious. There was some folks that did not do as well as they thought that they should and showed it. But hey, who was driving their car? All said and done, the vast majority of racers had a good time. I was very impressed with the RMT. They had to overcome major problems that they should have never experienced. We were very lucky to even have this event start on the day that it was scheduled. ALL of the ROAR equipment ? every little bit of it ? was LOST in shipment. The RMT had to beg and borrow everything needed to run this event from local sources. Once the equipment was acquired, it had to be mated, as nothing matched. All of the racing programs had to be downloaded. All of the pre-entries were reentered. All of the work that was done before traveling to Arkansas had to be redone. WHAT A HASSEL! Throughout this whole procedure, the RMT persevered. Never did I see tempers flair. I did see however a lot of sweat and clinched jaws. At last report, none of the missing shipment has been recovered. Once all was in readiness, the racing started on time. The event ran smooth as silk with no delays. With only a slight rain scare the weather cooperated with us. I look forward to returning to R/C Hobbies Raceway and seeing Quinton Robbins and family again. The picture below contains three special people. (left) Jason Lutz, friend& racer. I know this posting is looooong past due, but I, with the help of Fred Hohwart and Webmaster Corey have finally figured out how to do this. Being computer illiterate on my part has not helped.

Quinton Robbins, owner of R/C Hobbies Raceway in Jonesboro, Arkansas has agreed to host the first on road electric state championship in recorded history. R/C Hobbies raceway is located in the heart of Jonesboro?s Hotel / restaurant district. Be sure to bring the family. A shopping mall is very close and there is miniature golf next door. The results of the Arkansas State Electric On Road Championships were as follows:

Stock Sedan A Main ? TQ, Jason Wilkie; 1st, Jason Wilkie; 2nd, Drew Ellis; 3rd, Quinton Robbins.
Stock Sedan B Main ? 1st, David Bates; 2nd, Jay Martin; 3dr, Tom Colclasure.
Modified Sedan A Main ? TQ, Andrew Ellis; 1st, Andrew Ellis; 2nd, Jason Wilkie; 3rd, David Bates.
M-Class A Main Expert ? TQ, Lee Thompson; 1st, Jay Martin; 2nd, Lee Thompson; 3rd, Charles Leech.

By all reports, everyone had a great time. I became ill and had to send an assistant, who used my hotel reservation. Rest assured, I will be there next time. This year our Paved Regional races were split into two locations and I think that they were extra special. Berry Voltz in an effort to promote R/C racing acquired permission to set up a very large on road track in our local Bass Pro Shops parking lot. I have included a picture of the drivers stand with the Bass Pro Shops in the background. Although the weather turned out to be a little iffy, and the track had to be dried more than once, we were able to complete the day. Berry was heard to say more than once ?some of these people came a long distance to race and by golly we are going to race?. The counting ran smoothly and the racing had no protests. Berry Voltz asked me, as the ROAR Representative to tech the winners of each class. I didn?t mind doing it until I had to disqualify a car. It always hurts to have to disqualify a top finisher. The driver saw his mistake and accepted the disqualification very graciously. The results of the Region 6 On Road Championships were as follows:

The next day, we all moved, bag and baggage, to Small Cars Unlimited where the Region 6 Paved Oval regionals were held. The weatherperson messed with us all day Saturday, but Sunday was absolutely great. As usual, Toni cooked both breakfast and lunch. I did see some ?baaad? racers eating some of Toni?s home made brownies for breakfast. One guy told me that he was afraid that all of the brownies would be gone by lunch. The results of the Region 6 Paved oval Championships were as follows:

I believe that for all involved, this weekend will be remembered as a most pleasant event. I for one enjoyed everyone?s company. I am happy to report that everyone returned home safely. I always worry about a racer with not enough sleep getting home safely. Be sure to watch for my next report. I will have the results of the first Arkansas On Road State Championships to be held in many, many years. Quinton at R/C Hobbies Raceway, in Jonesboro AR, will be hosting this event.
