ROAR Web Report 5 from Region 6
March 29, 2010
As usual, racing in Region 6 as returned with a ?bang?. When it is cold, we tend to try to stay ?near the fire?. In an effort to be able to race in any weather, Lee at Nitro Toys and Hobbies has relocated to a building that is large enough to race in. Lee has built a carpet track from the very finest materials that is large enough to handle most any electric class, both on road and oval. An AMB Auto Count System is up and running with both personal as well as rechargeable transponders available. The local acceptance has been tremendous. It is very convenient to have a well stocked hobby shop in the same building as the track. I see nothing but good times ahead at Nitro Toys and Hobbies in Flowood, MS.

Dirt Oval racing is on a comeback in our region. Johnny Davis, with wife Debbie?s blessing and support has built a great track in Kosciusko, MS. Williamsville R/C Speedway is going to be a great addition to the family of ROAR tracks in Region 6. Any dirt oval type vehicle will find a welcome at Williamsville R/C Speedway. It would seem that the most popular classes at this time would be Out Law Sprints and Late Models. In this area there is a group of racers that have taken 1/8th scale off road nitro buggys and converted them into dirt oval racers. Hang on to your underwear people ? these cars think that they are rockets!

Recently John Davis (no relation to Johnny Davis at Williamsville R/C Speedway) owner of Davis R/C Raceway in Braxton, MS passed away. John has been involved in oval fuel R/C racing as long as anyone can remember. Although John?s track was not very old, there many adults racing today that John helped with their setup as well as coached their driving skills when they were kids. John was the type that would come up with something new, let you chase him for a week or two, then he would tell his secret and once again, everyone would be on a level playing field.
Bubba Barham, President of the Trackseekers R/C club, Brett McAlpin, Mike Morris and others thought that it would be appropriate to have an annual oval race to honor the memory of John Davis. It was decided that the first annual John Davis Memorial Race would be held on Trackseekers new dirt oval track. When John?s family was contacted, they thought the memorial race was a grand idea. The race was very well attended with racers coming even from outside the region. Bubba Barham spoke to the gathered racers and anyone who had something to add was invited to do so. Many racers shared fond memories with the group. John?s daughter was presented with a portrait of John and the car that he designed. The race was enjoyed by all and will be held again next year.

The 2009 Mississippi State Nitro Off Road Championship was held at Trackseekers in Flowood, MS. The weather was perfect, the track was prime and the racing was serious but fun. Many man (person) hours were expended in order to have a new, never raced on, and highly technical track for this event. Let me add that it is always a treat to attend an event and not see tempers flare. I?m not saying that everyone left the event happy with their results, but that they conducted themselves in a manner that would have made their mothers proud!
